Fill-in-the-Blank Inventions

July 27, 2016 | by Cynthia Herbert

HouseFiring up the imagination and thinking big enough isn’t always easy! Here’s a game to play with your kids or students to get the ball rolling.

Visualize everyday things in new ways. This game is something like a Cloze Paragraph or the “Mad Libs” game. http://www.madlibs.com Humor and outrageous results are used to help “think outside the box.”

  • Play this game with a partner.
  • Partner 1 reads the list of general information; e.g., “a number from 1 to 20.”
  • Partner 2 chooses a specific; e.g., “Nine.”
  • Partner 1 writes down Partner 2’s responses.
  • They plug the responses, in order, in the paragraph and then read the results out loud.
  • (Optional) Switch roles and do the paragraph again.
  • (Optional) The partners try to draw or construct the results, and then evaluate the results.
